Okay, really quick I need to share this because I see a recurring question/frustration "I have an issue" problem that can easily be addressed for those new to sewing with patterns.
I get asked why when sewing a pattern folks end up with a huge wadder o_0
So check to see if this applies to you:
When you go to cut your patterns do you cut according to the size on the BACK of the pattern envelope?
If so there is your error, the Big 4 pattern companies include a LOT of ease into their patterns so I NEVER cut my pattern size according to what is printed on the back of the envelope, I cut according to the "FINISHED MEASUREMENTS' Printed on the PATTERN PIECE. This way I can see exactly how much ease they added and cut according to the FINISHED size closest to my measurements. That way if you have to make fitting adjustments you are not trying to take in 5" of ease after the fact, LOL
Example: On the back of the envelope my measurements fall in the size 8 category but on the printed finished measurement on the pattern piece that size 8 finished is going to be HUGE on me so I may cut the size 6 or take out the added was before cutting my fabric because the FINISHED (key word here) measurements are closer to my measurements. I like my clothes fitted well so I don't need 3" of ease at the bust and I def don't need 5" of ease at my hips, lol

So interesting, and I know you are right. I'm not a newbie, but I still end up with garments way too big for me, and sometimes it's not easy taking the un-needed ease just by increasing a couple of seam allowances. I'll be taking your info into consideration, and will try it out on a muslin first. And BTW, not a newbie, but I would still be interested in your videos.

DeleteI would love some videos. I've sewn from a few patterns now, and what I'm curious about is an efficient way for transferring all the various pattern markings. Also, going over what type of ease you personally allow to get the great fitting garments we keep seeing from you. Also, a long while back I printed out your extensive measurement chart. How do you use all that information to adjust your patterns? With how much sewing output you produce it doesn't seem as if you make muslins...A pants series would be cool, too. I know this is a long list, and maybe more than you have in mind, but I'm just putting my questions out there.

ReplyDeleteThat is correct and also remember that most patterns, unless they are specialized, are sized for a A/B bra cup. If you are a full bust, you should use your high bust measurement for the pattern and then do a full bust adjustment. Patti Palmer Pletsch has an excellent video out for that called "Full Busted."

I am just curious but would you ever think teaching would be in your future, meaning teaching a class? I am sure that between raising a family and working you probably have no time for that but you would probably have large waiting lists. Again thank you for this post it was an eye-opener I am sure to alot of people. Also, would you maybe be able in the future to explain what a full bust ajustment is and how to go about that in terms of ajusting patterns? Just a thought. Thank you.

That's because you're probably a store size 0. I'm a store bought size 0-2 and I actually cut a 6-8. pattern sizing runs a bit different. :)

ReplyDeleteMimi I really need some help in this area.. I have made Vogue 2178 I cut a 14 all the way down.. Bust measures 35 upper bust 33.5, so I guess according to this I should have cut the size 10 Bodice? I understand that, but I need the 14 on the bottom in the waist and sometimes a bit more in the hip. If I were to cut the 10 how would that bodice match up to the skirt portion? It appears to me that it the bodice would be short about an inch in both sides of the bodice. Originally the bodice was huge in the top area where it ties. I also had that issue with OOP McCalls pattern 6323 unfortunately the patter had no finished garment measurement so I cut the 12.. Good lawrd the bust part was huge and the key hole was way too low.. when I put my bra on it was worse? Can you assist?
