#DIY Turtleneck Dress + Floral Velvet Shoes

Hi Darlings, so it turns out that the footage from the SD card is corrupted and not recoverable *insert hysterical crying here* but I did manage to go home on Tuesday, take a cat nap and start filming so you will have a new tut on Friday! This week I will also be creating the trim for my "chanel-esque" jacket by taking apart the fibers in the fabric and creating a braid of sorts, I did order some trim just in case the fibers start getting on my nerve, lol

My turtleneck dress however was a breeze, the turtleneck I used to create the pattern didn't have princess seams so I added them because I needed shaping and didn't want to add darts. I drew my princess seam lines right on my turtleneck before cutting it apart (pic below) and then I just used those pieces to create the pattern on paper, added seam allowances and of course length to make it a dress.

I also MUST say that THIS fabric may be my most favorite fabric to work with! it is such a yummy wool/rayon blend that will work for anything; dresses, skirts (pencil), jackets, sweaters it is so versatile and presses like a dream! I need more if it asap in every color and it's only $15 a yard.

  2. Ok, you are definately a mind reader! I've been having problems with a big project I'm working with, so this morning I came up with the idea of an easy palette cleansing project - a simple knit dress. Thought it would be just the thing to calm my nerves, and then up pops your new form fitted version of what I had in mind. Great minds think alike I guess (lol), except I want mine in black with a cowl neck. Princess seams would be a great addition to mine - thanks for the idea!!! I'll even post to your Flicker group when finished!

  10. Nice! I'm so used to belting everything I own, that now I forget what dresses look like without one! Then again, that dress fits right on without any accessory help. I love the blue too. :)

    2. Great idea, have been making knit dresses from t-shirts recently and they came out great. Nice idea Cadi, you can even go a step further and insert triangles (forget what it's called lol) to give the added swing :0) :0)

  15. Shouting a warm and sunny "hi" from the islands! Took a sewing class last year and I haven't been able to get inspired to continue at home. Until this very moment that is! Thanks Mimi! Your West Indian following is on the rise!

  16. I'm so jealous that it's warm enough for you to wear your legs bare. It's so cold here (Washington, DC) that it's painful. I got gas today and thought I would literally freeze to death within 5 minutes.

That dress is hot, though... and so are you!!

  22. I dont think there has been a post that I have disliked. I am ordering this fabric now. This website makes the local fabric stores look scarce. There is so much variety. As always, you look awesome! I wouldn't have thought of a turtleneck....but now I want one lol.

As for the other colors you will purchase that is the blend...can you post the ones that you purchase? I have looked at the wool blend and its other combinations so I'm not sure if it will be similar to wool/rayon fit. I was eyeing the ML15045 which is viscose/wool blend(Bisque).

Thanks for all your help and making sewing so easy and attractive :)

  24. Hi Mimi,

I just signed up for your blog. I'm lovin what I've seen. I have one question. If you've already answered this I apologize in advance, but do you have a zipper in the back. I tried to look at the fabric content and I didn't see any mention of anything that would allow for stretch. Thank you. Beautiful color fabric...one of my favorites.

  26. Hi Mimi

I just discovered your blog and I feel like I have won the 50 million $ lottery!!! I have spent many, many hours surfing the internet looking for sewing inspiration (funky style, great fit and fantastic sewing skills) and now I've found YOU!!! What a TALENT you have for this. I am devouring your posts and salivating over your STUNNING sewing creations and outfits - better than candy & jewels. I'll be there in a heart beat. Also - I would LOVE LOVE it if you would do a tutorial for this turtleneck dress. I am a moderately experienced sewer but having your step by step guidance on creating the princess seams would be great (or if you could re-direct me to another link that could help me figure it out). I'm the "serger queen" and am really used to sewing stretchy fabric. I even have an industrial cover stitch machine (although it's sadly dusty as family responsibilities keep me busy). THANK you for your incredible blog and please know how inspiring it is to me to get my own sewing machine humming. XX
