Fight The Fat Talk!

Today I am gonna share with you something that is really important to me and has always been a point of discussion on my blog. When Special K offered me an opportunity to share their latest campaign "Fight Fat Talk" I knew I had to participate. Special K and Tyra Banks have joined forces to help change the way we women often criticize our bodies.

I have always been an advocate of empowering each other, motivating each other and being kind to one another, but sometimes the person we need to be the most encouraging, motivating and kind to is OURSELVES. Unfortunately, according to Special K, 93% of women engage in fat talk ! That number was shocking to me. It made me think of all the times I have been in a dressing room trying on jeans and nothing fits, and then it begins…..The self deprecating talk…the FAT TALK.

I for the most part try to keep a healthy lifestyle and share some of those tips here on the blog. I am also relatively healthy at 5' 4" and 128 lbs. but I will admit that there are days when I have to consciously stop myself from criticizing my body while in front the mirror; so I have learned a little trick that I am going to share with you….you ready?

When I look in the mirror and I can feel the "Fat Talk" creeping in I close my eyes, turn around and say great things to myself like: I am gorgeous,  I have a great smile, I am sexy" then I turn around and I immediately feel better and see myself as all those things. It may sound silly but I promise it works. What we say to ourselves is critical to our self esteem and all around health so please say kind things always and help "FIGHT FAT TALK" #fightfattalk

As a mommy of girls ages 9-20 I see the impact of Fat Talk first hand and how contagious it can be so I want to make sure that I always tell them how beautiful they are and stop any negative talk that may come up. Here are a few ways you can  help!

1. Avoid picking at yourself and instead focus on all the things you love abut yourself.
2. DO NOT join in when your girlfriends start to fat talk but instead point out something great abut them and shift the conversation.
3. Educated your self on the campaign and all the great things that Special K offers to help in weight management and health.

  1. Thank you for the suggestion. I'm 5'6" and 153 lbs- about 10-20 lbs overweight, which I don't actually care too much about- it's the WHERE the weight is that bothers me- my belly and thighs. So when I am feeling like berating myself, I find the clothes that I feel sexiest in and look at me in the mirror. Dang I look good! lol

  2. Mimi, you're fit, you exercise, and although you may indulgence in some foods, I'm sure that as with most people who exercise, you are more conscious of what you eat. My point is as long as people, men or women, take of themselves, eat right, and exercise, there is no reason to be hypercritical about your body shape not being perfect. We're all different. However, not doing the above, and closing your eyes completely also led us to be a nation with worse health statistics than some underdeveloped nation, and notorious of being self indulgent. Do the health statistics (high rate of obesity, heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, cancer) say anything?
    In sum, EAT (not diet) good food, enjoy, MOVE, take care of yourself and others!

  3. I'm learning this daily I'm 5'3 and 198lbs. Sometimes I have the habit of saying I'm fat in front of her and she says don't say that "f" Mommy. Thank you

  4. It's great to see you posting your height/weight on here. Not because I think you're bragging about how healthy you are, but because it's breaking the barrier of silence about weight. When I freely throw around how much I weigh with my friends and family, most look at me shocked that I am so carefree about that number. But here's the thing. I could tell you I weight 25lbs less than I actually do, or 25lbs more and it doesn't really matter; it doesn't' change anything. I still look exactly the same, no matter what your perception of my weight is. Will you suddenly see me as a skinny person if I lie to you and tell you I weight less? Or will your perception shift to seeing me as obese if I tell you that I weigh more? NO. So what good is that number on the scale, really? None. It's really not good for anything.

  5. Man! I am so guilty of this! I am going to definitely use these tips. I think "fat talk" also hinders my weight loss/healthy living efforts. I'm hurting my own success...I should know better lol. Thanks so much for sharing this. (^_^)

  6. Bravo to Special K for coming up with this compaign, and double bravo to you for bringing it to our attention. It is scary how many young girls, who are at a perfect weight, find fault with themselves when in actuality there is nothing wrong with them. I have always had a very hard time losing weight and it does get frustrating when you cannot enjoy what you friends can, and thus, it is very easy for me to beat myself up. When I was not beating myself up, my ex (married 28 years) made sure to tell me how inferior and unworthy I was because of it. This just made it worse. I am glad we have someone like you in our corner, and that your girls have you as a role model and to reinforce that they are lovely and perfect just as they are. God bless you, Mimi.

  8. The most important thing is acknowledging the truth about your body. Love yourself and try not to comapre yourself to others. Then you can work on stages of how can you lose the weight and to get to that ideal weight.also try and be patient, to lose the weight the right way takes time. Turn your negative thoughts into positive ones.

  9. I am 5'11 and I struggle with my weight. I used to be 156lbs but since I quit smoking years ago I now weigh 176lbs. For me my biggest struggle is my age has changed my metabolism. At 36, I work out at least 3 times a week which is more than I did EVER in my life. I think for me my struggle has been acknowledgement because people say, "oh, you're tall so you can hid it better." Sort of like a dismissal of my struggle as well. So I don't spend a lot of time talking about it with people and which leads me to redirect my issue inwards more often.

  10. I am super guilty of fat talk I do it daily! Several times daily, actually. I know I shouldn't but I've gained a lot of weight & have never been this size before. I'm working on it though...thanks for the extra motivation to be more kind to myself! <3

  11. Thank you for this post! It's comforting to know that women of all sizes are guilty of the "fat talk". After giving birth to our first daughter, I am really trying to stop this behavior and become a better example of confidence. By the way, you did a post about the importance of drinking water. I put it to the test. I'm not quite getting to a gallon a day but pretty close! In combination with eating right and exercising, the maternity weight is coming off a lot faster than after having my son. Drinking water throughout the day makes me feel so much better too!

  12. I am very curvy and have a lot of junk in my trunk. My waist is small and I am truly shaped like a coca cola bottle. This means everything to some women but for me the back pain, knee pain and everything else that comes with it can lowery self esteem sometimes. But I do tell myself I am a bad chick and I am loving all 34 years of myself and won't let anyone who yells out oh that butt isbfake or she had surgery get me down. I was blessed with this body and I embrace it and thank God for giving me the abilities I do have. My husband makes me feel sexy every day and no matter my size I will continue to ooze positive thoughts and sexiness. High five to all women skinny and non skinny we are all beautiful.

  14. A close friend of mine, has ALWAYS spoke so negatively about herself & weight. A few years ago, her teenage daughter was in counseling for Anorexia nervosa. Your words are powerful
