DIY Striped Peplum Top & Skirt + Pattern Review M6754 View C

Hi Darlings!

Today's review is of this really great peplum top/dress pattern from McCalls most recent collection. What I liked immediately was how they played with the striped fabric in the sketch to create more interest in a chevron pattern so I grabbed this gorgeous emerald and navy striped knit   and cut out top, when I was done I had enough to make a pencil skirt (my 15 min. pencil skirt tutorial can be found
HERE) and when I put them both on I loved that it kinda looks like a dress but can be worn separately.

Pattern Description: M6754

Fabric Used: Striped Knit found HERE remember to use the coupon code: MIMIMAY10

Pattern Sizing: I cut the XS

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? I didn't use them but I did read them for the sake of review and they were good, the pattern pieces have grain lines to help you place your pattern pieces on the stripes properly. Just remember to cut one piece at a time so you can align the stripes properly.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?I love peplums and using the stripes to create a pattern makes it fun.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made? The sleeves are ridiculously wide and unflattering the way the pattern is cut, there is way too much ease so I pinched out almost 2 full inches to get a more flattering sleeve.

Would you sew it again? I might.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes, its a great little peplum and I think I will try the dress too.

  1. Looks great on you...

I just wanted to say that I found you yesterday and decided to go find me a lil sewing machine to get started. You took me back to the mid-80's when I was younger and my mother would make ALL my summer clothes with patterns from McCalls. The neighborhood mothers would be jelly as ever because I was lookin too cute!

  13. Mimi, I really think you should go bigger and come out with a clothing line. Your taste in clothes is fantabulous. When you initially posted the pattern of the jacket that you wore yesterday, I couldn't wait to see the finish product as I knew your interpretation would be more amazing than the actual pic and you didn't disappoint. Since you won't make me something and I can't raid your closet, please design so I can go to your website and buy:-)

  31. All I can say is what everyone else is saying. I have this pattern and was trying to decide if I wanted to make it in a solid color but you have certainly changed my mind. Great Look!

  32. As usual I love what you do! When I grow up I want to be like you. I have already been inspired to do two of the patterns you made. I hope you do a tutorial on how to line up striped fabric the way you do in these pics.

  33. Love it Mimi!!!!! As always you are the #1 stunna!!! (In my southern belle voice, girlfriend you are stunning, as always) :)
I'm glad to see the peplum look come back!!! It's always been one of my favorite styles!!

  34. Wow, I have that same pattern and wasn't going to attempt the stripe version, but after seeing your version, I've changed my mind! Will you kindly provide more detail on the sleeve alterations you made in yours? The pattern has a dart at the shoulder ... Did you keep that (I can't see it in the pics). And you made the whole sleep narrower by about 2 inched? How about the length? I hope my version turn out even half as good as yours.

  35. I made the top this weekend . I was thinking about the dress but that was too much flare for me. I love it with the pencil skirt . Thanks

  39. Hi Mimi!
I want to make this top and skirt. I looked at the McCall pattern and noticed that a pencil skirt pattern is not included. Do you have a pencil skirt pattern you suggest?
