Love it!!! Thanks for the tut! I'm gonna go get some fabric this weekend and make 1or 5!!!! Lol. I'm also going to change it into a t-shirt style. Thanks again!!!!
Girl, thanks for sharing yourself so much!!! I have to hurry up and clear my sewing table so I can jump on these sewing tutorials. I download mines and save both video and printable to computer in a file named: MIMI :)
LOVE this!! Making one for myself and my daughter! She is going to love this!! Thanks posting this!! So excited!! I even have all of the stuff already in my sewing room! Amazing! :) Thanks Mimi!! You ROCK! Pics when they are done!
Hello Mimi. Thank you so much for the tutorial. Your video makes it look so super easy. I have a question though, I have a nice red polka dot material that is only 45inches in width, do you think this dress would look okay with a shorter (midi) length? Also, I like having some sort of strap/sleeve on my dresses. Would you suggest adding spaghetti sort of strap to this style dress? Thank you so much for taking time out to show us this. I love your blog :)
Hello Mimi, my question has to do with Labafun"s question about the straps. Spaghetti straps won't work for me. Will it mess up the look of the dress if I did a wider strap? I would need something wide enough to cover a bra strap.
Hello Mimi, In ref to Labafun's question about the straps. A spaghetti strap wouldn't work for me. Would a wider strap, to cover a bra strap mess up the look of the dress?
You can make the straps wide enough to cover your bra, it won't look bad and I have a dress just like my tut with a wider strap ;-) it will look just fine.
Great tutorial!! I was able to follow about 98% of it, but I have one question regarding the elastic at the waist. Did you pull the elastic in between the binding tape and the fabric, or did you just sew the elastic to the top of the binding tape?? You didn't show that specific step in detail. Also, is a stretch jersey fabric best for this project?
I can't wait to find the perfect color and get started!
Hi LaToya, Yes you pull the elastic through the opening just like you do for the top of the dress, same exact method ;-) You can use any fabric for this as long as it it light weight. It does not have to be a knit or have stretch.
Girl, you gonna make me buy a strapless bra for this one. I work in the garment district too, there should be no reason that I can't pull this off! Thanks so much for sharing.
Girl, you gonna make me go buy a strapless bra for this one. I work in the garment district too, so there is no reason I shouldn't be able to execute this. Thanks for sharing.
Mimi, love this tut. I can't wait to get to work. You truly are amazing.
I have a tut request. At some point (hopefully in the near future), would you please do a jumpsuit? It can be as simple as a jumpsuit to the maxi dress. That would be super!
how cute...so I think I'm make this version, a short version and a tank top version....I would love to see this with a haremish type of pants.....hmmmmm....
Great tut thanks for sharing your info I will post a pic once I make one but I will have to make a cover for my arms as that are not in good shape but working on that!!!
Thanks for the tutorial and sharing your knowledge I will make one but have to find something to cover my arms as they are not in the great shape as yours I am working on that thanks again
Your tutes are so inspiring. After sewing for others, they are a great way to do something quick, fun and fashionable for myself. Thank you so much. Love your blog.
gorgeous and you make everything super easy. DO you think you can do a tut or a message on how to turn this dress into a romper or a pant set? I would love this for the summer in a romper. P.S. your awesome!
I showed this to my friend and she's like "You know I want one". I told her fine but I'ma make her make it herself. I'm about to send this link to another friend and see can't I entice one more person into a beginner sewing project LOL.
Mimi, I recently discovered your blog via pinterest and have enjoyed reading through many back entries. I worked a sewing machine into my budget and cannot wait to get started on all these projects. I have only sewn one thing in my life (a pencil case back in 7th grade home ec - approx 15 years ago), but you have shown me that sewing projects are not necessarily scary and difficult! :)
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this tutorial! I love to learn tricks/tips from other sewers. I'm going to try and make one tomorrow. It would be great for you to include a tutorial with your pattern reviews. I would have no problem dropping some loot in your PayPal account for the time and effort. :)
Hey Mimi, it's Kerlley and I'm at the fabric store now....yay me!!! I'll take a pic of the outcome & thanks for inspiring me but most importantly for sharing.
Just drop by to say thank you for another wonderful tutorial!!!! I will be shopping for fabric soon so this it definately a new project for me to work on.
I just finished a maxi to take on vacation. I stayed up late to make it. We leave tomorrow and I don't have a single thread packed LOL! I will be sure to send you a pic when I wear it. Thanks for a great tut mimi!
I already made your maxi skirt and maxi dress! Loved doing it! I never made my own clothes, but I saw your tutorials and I just had to sew it! Now, one week later, I bought a sewing machine and made already 5 new pieces! Thnx for sharing Mimi G.
Mimi I can't keep up with you girl! I have made 2 maxi skirts in two weeks. I am so glad I brought enough fabric for this dress. And now I have to make the maxi skirt with the sash!!! Thanks for the tutorials!
Mimi, you're awesome! Your tutorials are great!!! I didn't want to leave a post until I actually made my dress but I was looking at the gap website and saw the exact striped maxi dress on their website for $75.00!!! I can't believe it! And yours looks better made! I am so excited to make my dress! I ordered my fabric online, just a couple more days and it'll be here for me to sew it up! :)
Thank you so much for taking your time to make the tutorials!
Thanks for the tut Mimi. I got this done in an hour and I love it. I made a change in the cut above the waist at center back to allow for my sway back. Normally, these tops puddle too much back there. So I cut out 3inches from the top cb and graduated back up to the sides. See my blog. Www.sewtofit.com
I made this today in about an hour and a half (I'm slow!!) and it was sooo easy. I modified it a bit to make the top less billowy - I turned it into an empire waistline. Love it - about to make another one.
Wow! Another great DIY. I wouldn't have thought making this dress could be so easy. It is so cute and love your choices of fabric (esp. that shade of pink). I just love your DIYs! You make it so easy to whip something cute up. I plan on trying this one when I get back to Cali. I can't wait! This is a perfect summer maxi dress. ;) Thanks for sharing.
Mimi, does the fabric need to be a knit fabric? I found some beautiful fabric but I'm just worried that the flow on the dress will not be the same if it's not a knit. Thanks in advance.
Love this! Made two already, and got crazy with the second one and made a scalloped hem (that took me three tries to get right, LOL). Your blog is so inspiring, I'm an intermediate level sewer and I'm just loving all of your projects. I'm proud of myself that I can look at a lot of the patterns you make and can say 'hey, I think I can make that.' Thank you so much for showing the world how hip sewing can be!
My daughter and I love what do and enjoy sewing the outfits are my style and my daughter, she wants me to make her the dresses. So that's my plan. Thank you so much tot bringing back sewing.
I'm in luv with this dress! I'm 6 months preggo and all i wear are maxis...you have inspired me...i can't wait to do the jumpsuit once this baby drops....lol
I love this dress but love the fabric even more. I've been looking everywhere for it and cant find it. Where did you purchase the fabric? Thanks in advance. I'm so glad I found you. I'm addicted.
Thank you. That tutorial was a nice unexpected treat. I was just checking around your site and low and behold, I found another free video tutorial. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteHave a GREAT week!!!
What sizes of elastic did you use?
ReplyDeleteI used 1" elastic for the top and 1/2" elastic for the waist.
DeleteDo you think it would look great with a bigger size elastic on the bottom?
DeleteIt's so pretty .... I can't wait to make 1.... #teammimi
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial. I want one or two of these. Thanks -- keep them coming.
