DIY Dress: Pattern Review McCalls 6553

Happy Monday!

Today was a chance to wear the latest dress I made using M6553, It is a super comfy dress to wear and so cute!

Here is my result!

Pattern Description: Very loose-fitting, pullover dress has princess seams, self-lined yoke back, side openings for self belt, back pleats/ neck slit with button/thread loop closing, and shaped hemline.

Pattern Sizing: I cut the 6

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? They were pretty simple but if I make it again I will use RTW construction methods because she of the steps can be done better.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I was curious to see how the dress looked made up aside from the photo of the model on the envelope so I went ahead an made it and love it, it is so comfy and cute and the shaped hemline is really nice.

Fabric Used: I used a dress weight red gabardine

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I didn't make any but if I make it again I will remove the pleat in the back because I didn't like it after I made it and will replace it with gathers.

Would you sew it again? I might in a jersey for a casual look.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes!

I love the way it looks from the side!
Various Jewelry, Cat Eye Sunnies, Essie Polish "Trophy Wife" lol!

I am going to change the yoke method on this pattern if I make it again, I also hate the pleat and would rather it have gathers.

  6. Sooo cute. I would have never given this dress a second look before you made it. Now I have to rethink this look for summer. The look with the belt would definitely flatter some of us more well endowed girls since the belt gives some waist definition.

  27. The color is fierce and the nail polish is rocking! Not quite sure about the dress. Not used to you in such a loose fitting dress. I dunno about this one. But the color and fabrication works.

  34. Hi Mimi, I've been following your blog but never left a comment. This dress is gorgeous on you. The pleat in the back looks nice on you. I can't wait to see what it will look with the gathers. You are AWESOME!!!!

  35. How come you didn't try out for fashion star because your designs are off the chain. You have mad talent. Share it with the world.

  36. Hey Mimi!!! You can wear just about anything and look good!!! I love the front portion of the dress, but I can't get with the back part. Maybe it would look different with the 'gathering' you were talking about. The front is sweet, though, with the tie and all. Anyhow, you are still rocking it! You'd probably make a trash bag look good on you!!!!! LOLOL!!!!

  40. Mimi, you knocked this one straight out of the ball park! Love this dress on you. I was looking at this pattern and decide not to buy it because I don't like tie belts in the back. (the original view on Fashion Star). But your version has me running back to get this pattern...I have to have this gorgeous dress! Thanks so very much for sharing you very impeccable style with all of us!

  41. Fab! I got this pattern in the Joann's sale last week. I loved the heaped hem and loose fit but I don't think I will o the belt. Did you find it true to size? Because I won't to make I as close fitting as possible since I am planning on not using th belt. Thanks!

  42. Wow, your version looks so much better than the model on the pattern. I think the pleats in the back are keepers. The pleats are nice and you are definitely wearing the dress.

  47. Hi Mimi,
I'm new to your blog. I'm about to cut this pattern, but the finished garment measurements seem like I should cut a 6. I'm normally a 10 in real life, and find that I usually have to cut patterns a couple of sizes above that. Do you find this one runs big, particularly in the bust?
Many thanks from a new reader!

    1. Its pretty true to size and its a loose fitting dress so cut close the your actual measurements that match the finished measurements on the pattern, don't get stuck on their sizes they will never match anything anyway because they are ll made with a different amount of ease.
