DIY Flounce Dress + Pattern Review B5985

Hi Darlings!

I am running a little late with today's post because I woke up a little under the weather and had a slow start to my day. I also made a very big decision today and so my mind has been in a million places (a wonderful decision). I am also so excited to announce that I am already SOLD OUT! for the 3rd Annual Mimi G Sewing, Fashion & Style Conference 2014! In less than 3 days we are not only sold out but OVER SOLD so I am in the midst of getting a larger space, lol!

Today's dress has been in the making for some time but I just hadn't gotten around to finishing it. The fabric is part of that same fabric I used for the Lil Green Dress and my Leggings/ Workout Tutorial. It is very similar to a neoprene which I have been using for months before it hit the runways, it is such a fun fabric to work with and very forgiving!

DIY Dress Pattern HERE / Fabric HERE / Steve Madden Heels HERE (on sale)

Pattern Description: B5985 (on sale for $2.99 right now)

Pattern Sizing: I cut the smallest size which is a 6 but it was still huge before I did any fit adjustments.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, this dress is really simple to put together.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I did not like the pattern envelope but I could see beyond it so I figured I would give it a shot.

Fabric Used: Athletic Spandex (very similar to neoprene) found HERE **Use code PRESIDENT20 for 20% OFF)

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I had to grade it down a significant amount. I removed almost 4" of ease in the skirt and 2.5" of ease on the bodice. I shortened view A by 4" because the longer below the knee was not a good look for me.

Would you sew it again? No I only need of these but it is a nice and easy dress to make.

  1. Wow Mimi, I think I remember when you said you were going to hook this pattern up. I could not imagine what you could do with it because the pattern envelope picture is soooo bad. But wow! This is beautiful!!! You really did your thing with it. Great job as always. Love the hair too! - Charlene

  11. I want to save this pattern on my Pinterest sewing board. I already subscribe to you on Pinterest. Question: would you mind if I spliced together the pic of you that says "Flounce, Animal Print" with the pic from the Butterick pattern so that I know that this looks great once it's made, not like the pic on the pattern?

  18. Mimi You look fabulous . I am 5'10 and I am learning to sew, but I am not sure on how to get started and what to sew. Also if by chance you get a larger space will there be more tickets available? Due to the fact that I have wanted to attend your event but due to me being deployed with my military unit during those time I wasn't able to do so.
