DIY Dress Using V8408 + Thigh High Boots ;-)

Hello Darlings! I am serious loving this dress. I made it once before like 6 years ago maybe but I was going through old patterns I pulled this one out again because I LOVE the collar.  The pattern is currently out of stock on the vogue site and it is an OOP so I don't know when and if it will be back but  I have found one or two on ebay and etsy so you may want to do a google search.

****Thanks to a wonderful follower who pointed out that V8630 is very similar (and it is) you can get it on sale for $4.99!****

DIY Dress V8408 OOP/ Colin Stuart Over The Knee Boots (on clearance) HERE / Clutch (in blue) HERE / Belt (old) / Sunnies Kate Spade

Pattern Review: V8408 OOP

Pattern Description: Misses Dress

Pattern Sizing: I cut the 8 but had to grade down a lot for the look I wanted.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done with it? Kinda

Were the instructions easy to follow? This is labeled an Vogue "Easy" pattern and it is. Its a pretty straight forward and the princess seams make it easy to fit.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the collar but I didnt want it stiff so I used a pro-weft interfacing found HERE

Fabric Used: I used a Ponte Roma I got from Michael Levin (I love working with this fabric) it is easy to work with, has some stretch so I fits great and feels great. I got my fabric HERE makes sure to use the coupon code "mimiholiday" for 10% off your purchase.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I omitted the side invisible zipper because my fabric has a nice amount of stretch so the zipper was unnecessary. I also used a covered button kit to make the buttons out of the same fabric.

Would you sew it again? No but I am going to use the collar to make a jacket ;-)

Would you recommend it to others? Yes

  4. Wow, loving everything about this! I did wonder if the pattern was actually "easy" when I saw the picture on facebook. I know not all Vogue easy patterns are actually that. What a shame it's out of print, I love the shape of this dress.

  8. I have lost my sense of style and I hate shopping because I get overwhelmed with what to wear or what looks good on me, however I must admit your style is definitely inspiring, and how I envision myself to dress.

  9. I have this pattern! I keep meaning to make it. Now I can. Ponte Roma...I can find that at Vogue Fabrics. I'd have them to do the self-fabric buttons just because they do that stuff so well. And those boots are darling. I want to wear cute boots again (I'm afraid to after a bad fall in boots down the stairs nearly two years ago). I can't see this dress with anything but boots, so I better work on strengthening my ankles...

  12. I like that you used a knit fabric as opposed to ones that they suggested. I am never sure if you can do that, but now I know that you can.

  15. Ok. it's beautiful!, as is everything you showcase. I remember when you made that pattern a while ago. I fell in love with your dress and had to have the pattern. I did make it in a brown wool pointe knit, and love it till this day. As a matter of fact, I've been planning on making it again for the past month - just haven't gotten around to it yet. I need to ask - did you interface the collar??? I did in my brown one, and have always wished I hadn't interfaced. Maybe I used the wrong type of interfacing, too heavy.

    1. Hi Faye ;-) Yes I did interface it but I used a pro-weft found here: https://www.fashionsewingsupply.com/product_info.php?products_id=29&osCsid=8b1e258851da4b77fc4485f8a2b01fb2

It keeps the collars shape in tact but its soft not stiff.

  17. Mimi did you use a serger to make this dress or a sewing machine?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I dont ever sew on my serger. I only use my serger to finish edges because I fit as I sew and if I cut off the seam allowances on my serger as I am sewing and need to fix something it makes it much harder. I also prefer the secure stitches of my machine vs. just the serger.

  21. Breathtakingly beautiful!!!! I made this dress a few yrs back and absolutely loved it. I haven't worn it in about 2 yrs. The use of a knit fabric and wearing thigh-high boots never occurred to me! LOL I guess those boots will come out of the closet and maybe I'll make one up in a knit. Thanks for the inspiration!

  27. Mimi, you are inspiring me to sew more than pillows and table runners! This dress, that cape and everything else you've sewn - LOVE. I have a friend who used to have her own clothing company - she taught me the basics of sewing, but we never got to sewing garments. One day, when I grow up, I just know I'm going to sew clothes with your patterns/recommended patterns! Until then, your site and style = pure awesomeness! How do I get dressed everyday? Thinking 'what would Mimi do?' LOL! I don't come close, but it's worth the try. Thank you for what you are doing and best of luck!
