Hi Darlings!
First......The WINNER of the Electric Scissors is....JOY MILLER make sure you email me your address.
I admit that I am a fabric snob and sometimes I can turn my nose up at something because I think it is silly looking BUT yesterday I received a rather ENORMOUS amount of fabric courtesy of Joann Fabric and Crafts (and can I just say I could sew for an entire year and not be able to sew it all; I am so blessed and will be sharing the wealth in some upcoming giveaways) okay back to the story......in one of the bags was a large assortment of their "Style In An Instant" collection which I always see at the store but never bother to check it out, well ladies and gents I have been converted, LOL! Let me splain'
Ok, It's that fabric you see that is shirred at the top and all you have to do is measure around your chest and cut, sew ONE SEAM up the back and add straps and you are done! so last night while I was trying to put all that fabric somewhere I pulled out this orange print and thought to myself "Self, this is kinda cute, I bet you can work this out" so I measured around my chest, sewed up the back and cut 2 pieces from the extra fabric and made some straps and lo' and behold I was sold, LOL
Now some of the prints/fabric contents on some I have come across are not very cute but THIS one is fab. 100% Rayon so it is soft and flowy and the print is very cute. I made the one I am wearing and blue/green one that will wear during the weekend and will share pics.

Thanks for this review! I'll be stopping off at Joann's after work today!
ReplyDeleteSweet! print that coupon ;-)
DeleteOMG I love this summer dress, I need to make one of this. Pls, Pls Mimi we need tutorial on the dress. How about the elastic top part. Did the fabric come already with elastic or you added that. If yes, could you please explain how. - I hope I'm not asking for too much :)
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing to it. It comes shirred like that already all you have to do like I said in the post is wrap it around to see how much you need and cut it. Then sew although way up the long end and that is it. Add some straps ;-)
DeleteA shirring tutorial would be nice so some one could make this from scratch
DeleteOh heck no, LOL I tried shirring one time and almost pulled my hair out. There is a method to the madness and every time I did it was uneven no matter what I did. The bobbins don't like it either.
Delete@niki: There is a free pattern and tutorial for how to make your own shirred sundress. I tried it two years when I first started sewing and no problem figuring it all out: http://heatherross.squarespace.com/download-mendocino-sundress-pa/
DeleteJust be warned it might mess up the tension on your machine. It's fixable but it's a headache.
Because of you, I have a genuine interest in sewing! I have only made one thing in my life and it was a pair of boxer shorts for my home economics class in high school!!!! (I won't say how long ago that was)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your posts!
That is so great! thank you
Deletehi mimi, i'm a new subscriber and i was wondering if there is a diy step on step on making the long denim maxi skirt that you're wearing in one of your photos, i like the way you put that denim skirt together, thanks and hope to hear from you soon.
Deletei meant step by step, thanks!
DeleteI just left JoAnn's not even 1 hr ago and walked right by that fabric. Very cute look!
ReplyDeleteLOL ;-) Thanks
DeleteI used to wear these when I was a kid...way back in the day! My mother made these dresses for me. It's nice to see the updated fabrics. I agree...it's the easiest thing to make! The orange looks great on you. Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteOMG! I can't believe I won! Thanks so much Mimi, I really appreciate it! ...Emailing you my info right now! =)

SUPER CUTE! I too look at that type of fabric and think that's for kids, but once again you have proven me wrong. This is a delightfully cute dress sister. I plan to whip one up this summer. Once classes are done I'm going on a sewing frenzy. Can't wait. Thanks for the inspiration Mimi!
ReplyDeleteSweet! my pleasure doll!
DeleteVery cute and I definitely will check out this fabric. I am always a little concerned about a maxi dress because I am only 5'3" and everything makes me look stumpy. However, this could easily be made into a shorter version.
ReplyDeleteI am only 5' 4" which is why I wear so many high heels, lol
DeleteKudos to Joy M for winning! :-). Nice maxi and the color is very nice, too. :-)
ReplyDeleteok..i, too, can do this..giggle! this is too cute! smile
ReplyDeleteSuper cute. There's a JoAnn's opening next week, now I have an excuse to go!
ReplyDeleteI am taking my daughter to get material tonight.. I need her to sew once a week.. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteMimi - this is so fly!! The necklace is perfect for it!! Great job lady!
ReplyDeleteI love the print and the color!! Thank a lot for the coupon too. (^_^)
ReplyDeleteHey Ms. Mimi! Simply love this! How many yards of fabric do you think I'll need? Like max amount for a chest that measures 42 inches. Thanks in advance!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely and easy too! My mother brought me some of this shirred fabrics to make summer dresses for my daughter but they are not half as cute as yours
ReplyDeleteGreat wedges!
This is adorable! I was just looking on their site for fabric ideas for my next project and saw the "Style in an Instant" collection. I was wondering if they were any good. Will definitely make this in the future. THANKS! ! SN: Congratulations Joy!! :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's cute. I use to wear shirred dresses and rompers back in the 70s when I was little! It was a summer staple.
ReplyDeleteI'm new to your blog and enjoying all the fab styles you have created. You're definitely bringing out the fashionista I'm me. Looking for this design tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteMimi, I always admire your sewing and generosity God bless you for both of them! Happy sewing!!
ReplyDeleteHi Mimi! I am assuming that if a yard is 36 and my chest is 36 also I would need a bit more 1 yard, correct? I am kind of slow with this math thing... I want the blue fabric badly!!!
ReplyDeleteMimi, i'm so inspired by your talent and ability to sew and make your own clothes, it looks like you bought those clothes from the store, you are Truly Blessed and i'm grateful that you don't mind sharing your talent with others that has that passion for fashion, thank you, GOD gave you the talent and ability for HIS PURPOSE and for you to share with others is what HE wants, keep sewing and Glorifying HIM through this what you're doing. Have A BLessed Day!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous! I've never given these pre-shirred fabrics a second thought but I love this maxi dress length! I went to the store today and got the blue and green print after seeing yours! I have to admit I'm usually a fabric snob myself after being spoiled by the online selections.
ReplyDeleteMIMI LOVE THE DRESS, COLOR N FABRIC LOOKS GREAT ON YOU WITH UOUR COMPLECTION.
ReplyDeleteJust grabbed the cutest black & white "style in an instant fabric" yesterday to make my dress later today!! Last night was date night with hubby and I couldn't stop talking about it lol! Thanks again. Ps... the orange fabric you used IS really cute in person...that's my next pick!!
ReplyDeleteHi Mimi! You were right! This dress was easy to make. I made two dresses for my daughter this weekend (each took less than 15 mins to make). When you get a chance, please check them out on my blog, chickpool.blogspot.com. Oh and that dress is perfect on you! Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteI made this dress over the weekend I do have a question how do you make the straps? It was super easy to sew.
ReplyDeleteI just cut fabric 3" wide and and folded them in half sew it using a 5/8" seam allowance then turned it inside out and sewed them on to the dress where I felt they would be most comfy.
DeleteThanks Mimi u rock!!!
ReplyDeleteMimi I am ready to start trying these super cute projects. However, I know nothing about machines or sewing. What type of machine should I start with?
ReplyDeleteHi Mimi, the #DIY Dress link does not seem to be working.
