DIY Color-Blocked Dress + Pattern Review V1329

 photo colorcorrect_zps0f62328d.png
Hi Darlings!

When this pattern came out I knew I wanted to make it especially since I am a Kay Unger fan but I just could not manage to get to it so when Michael Levine's showed me this amazing fabric I knew EXACTLY how I would use it.

The fabric is a double faced wool/knit blend meaning one side is this amazing PINK and the back is a bold RED which makes this gorgeous fabric so cool to use because I got a color-blocked dress from only one single fabric!!

Dress DIY / Necklace F21 / Bangles J. Crew / Watch MK / Shoes Steve Madden (old)

Pattern Description: V1329 Close-fitting, lined dress (fitted through hips) has yokes, right front with pleats, back princess seams, and invisible zipper.

Fabric Used: Wool/Knit Blend Double Faced (Pink/Red) Item Number: ML#243635 available HERE Use MIMIJUNE10 at check out for 10% off your purchase. *note: the fabric comes in 2.5 Yard pieces and should be on the site shortly, it was just added today so check again this afternoon*

Pattern Sizing: I cut the 8 but had to grade down about 1" on both sides.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes actually for a Vogue "Designer" pattern is was pretty straight forward. Not too many pieces and once the front and back are constructed it is easy to make fitting adjustments to the side seams (if not much is needed) without having to fuss to much. Also if you have never made a dress with a full lining this one is not that difficult to do.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the style and classic sheath feel and I love anything color-blocked so being able to make this dress from only one fabric was just icing on the cake.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Just took it in about 2" total on the waist to hip but other then that it was a good fit. I wish I would have checked the length because I prefer this style dress to come to mid knee or below but it works ;-)

Would you sew it again? No, I don't think I need another one of these but I do recommend it.

  6. beautiful workmanship as always - i LOVE that you finish and line your garments. THAT is a mark of true quality. It's clear that you are a perfectionist. This is such a lovely simple shift, but the gathering at the waist just gives is an extra "umph" to really set it off. the nude shoe choice is perfect with this bright dress (though I know many who would have keep the color popping there too) Picture Perfect! great accessories too. Curious about your comment on FB that you "had" to watermark your photos now. Too many reposts? I think it's a good practice for you not so much that someone will take credit for the image, but that you can advertise the source and guide folks to your blog. I've been following you for quite some time now, (I don't sew a LICK) and I admire your talent and work ethic and marvel that you can do it all with a family the size that you have. (First time I saw you I was like "oh my goodness, she looks like kinfolk! freckles and all!) Congratulations on your big event next month! I've gone on WAY too long! Congratulations on all your success - well deserved, you have worked for it.

    1. Thank you so much! I avoided watermarking for a long time cuz it looks awful on images but the sharing is out of control and not every one follows the guidelines ;-)

  7. Beautiful Mimi! I notice you sew a lot with knits, what do you recommend to someone who is 'afraid' of knits??? I know how to sew....have even made a professional ballet tutu for my daughter....can't seem to get a grip on knits....=(

  9. this is beautiful. Vogue should have had the model wear the dress in a lighter color so that you can see the details. I would not have thought to buy this pattern.

  13. Mimi, I've had this pattern since it came out. My only issue is deciding where to do the FBA. Should I put the side front and front pattern pieces together and then make the adjustment? What's your expert advice on this one?!!!!

  22. LOVE!!!!!! The fabric is amazing. I have a question for you......is there anyway to truly do a blindstitch by machine and to have it look like a professionally done blindstitch. Thank you and EXCELLENT JOB on the dress and fabric choice.

  23. Love the pink and red color combo, one of my favorites. Looks so fab and I love how the fabric itself was double faced- sometimes it's tricky to get the color blocked look because different fabrics can be different weights and a pain to blend and sew together. This looks perfect

  27. Gorgeous dress, it looks great on you! Question, how do you pre-treat/treat your fabric since it contains wool. Do you only dry clean which is the suggested method normally for wool? I've avoided buying wool fabrics because I hate going to the drycleaners.
