#DIY Front Slit Maxi Dress + Pattern Review McCalls 6744 View C

FABRIC HAS BEEN RESTOCKED! HURRY ONLY 100 YARDS AVAILABLE @ $3.00 a yard! Go HERE

Hi Darlings!

I hope you all are having a good day, I went to bed last night with a heavy heart thinking of the folks in Oklahoma; mother nature is a beast and it is so hard to watch the news and feel so helpless. I pray they recover quickly and start to heal from this terrible ordeal.
I spent part of last weekend in my sewing room sitting in the middle of the room looking at all my pattern books and enormous stacks of fabric and just could not decide on anything to sew. Having so many options sometimes can be a bad thing because I spend hours trying to decide what I want to spend my precious few hours on and eventually just get frustrated at myself and sew nothing, lol
You see, if I know that I don't have enough time to finish what I really want to make in one sitting (next on list is a white suit) then I don't want to start it and have to finish over a few days and since last weekend I only had 2-3hrs of sewing time allotted I needed quick and easy! When this happens I pull out the easiest pattern near me that requires no mental workout to sew; I refer to this project as "mindless sewing" this way I get to sew something and get instant satisfaction with little to no brain power, lol.
Well I thought I was being smart and all by picking an easy pattern but then I complicated it a tiny bit by picking this border print knit that I then had to cut a certain kinda way to get a good "look" with the stripes and floral pattern, it worked great and actually was a lot easier then I though it would be because one side is just striped so I cut one side just with just the stripes and then the wrap front part I cut in the floral and then placed the back pattern piece so that the florals looked like they were coming out of my side.

Pattern: McCall 6744 View C & Fabric: Border Print Knit ONLY $3.00 a yard! HERE

The pattern is really easy to cut and sew and it is a great summer dress and beach cover up if made in a sheer fabric. I had fun sewing it and will probably make it again soon in a solid color and since it sews up quickly I might make the other views too for some quick, easy and cute dresses for my weekend errand runs.

elastic at the shoulders incased with the seam allowance, fast and easy ;-)

  3. Lordy mercy! $3 a yard. Tempting. Stripes and florals work well together, but I'm not confident my skills could produce this hot frock. My dress would be a buttery mess...BUT I would rock it anyway!!! ;)

    Beautiful darlin!

  19. So excited to see this made up!

I just purchased this pattern the other day with intentions of getting to it soon ~~~two more skirts in the project box to finish and I am free, yay! I have been forcing myself to finish things I started years ago while re-tuning my old skillset before I can make anything new. I think this dress will end up being one of my summer go-to's.

Thanks for all you share, Mimi :) You are the queen of style AND motivation!

  22. Do I really only need three yards of this fabric? I've bought the pattern, I can see how easy it is with another batch of fabric before I try to match those florals and stripes.

  23. Dang, sold out. Oh well, I'm sure I can find other cute fabric.

  24. Mimi, I love this dress. The print is GORG!

I came across a pattern yesterday in Threads Mag and immediately thought of you. You may already know of it, have it, or have sewn it. It's Marfy F2504, Shirt Dress/Blouse. If you haven't already sewn it and you do like it, I would love to see a Mimi G. post of this dress.

    Thank you in advance,

  36. Hi Mimi! I love this dress! I've missed checking your blog regularly...your style is so inspiring! I was looking at some older posts and think I came up with the last two outfits for my upcoming trip out of town! :)

  37. Mimi can I just say that I love Low Price Fabric. I just received my knits: black and cream stripe (same type that you made the McCall top and pencil skirt) and a chevron pattern. Heather also emailed me to let me know that the other fabric that I ordered is on back order. I'm all the way on the East Coast but will continue to make purchases from them.

  38. Mimi, I'm 5'11" and can not find dress that is long enough or reasonably price for a tall women. I have a urge to sew my own dresses to get length I want them to be as well to customize a tailor fit for myself. I love A-line dresses because I'm tall & straight, I could mix & match dress pattern tops & bottoms to create different styles.

    1. Hey lady, I feel your pain! I am 6'0 tall & have the same issue! I am starting with this dress! #TallPower

    2. Mimi, I've been following you for a year. THIS dress is what has made me start sewing.

I bought 3 patterns today. Quick Question, how many yards do I need to make this dress for a 6'0 tall size 18/20 woman?

      THANK YOU LUV

    3. I had the same problem years ago...I'm only 5'7", but am all legs and could never find pants to fit the length I needed...Teaching myself to sew was the answer. Starting with dresses and skirts, especially the patterns marked "easy" or "quick 1 hour" is what helped me in the beginning. McCalls and Simplicity patterns semmed to be really good for beginners. I would avoid Vogue patterns at first, even their simple patterns can be a bit overwhelming when just starting out.
