Hi Darlings!
Today's review is of this really great peplum top/dress pattern from McCalls most recent collection. What I liked immediately was how they played with the striped fabric in the sketch to create more interest in a chevron pattern so I grabbed this gorgeous emerald and navy striped knit and cut out top, when I was done I had enough to make a pencil skirt (my 15 min. pencil skirt tutorial can be found
HERE) and when I put them both on I loved that it kinda looks like a dress but can be worn separately.
Pattern Description: M6754
Pattern Sizing: I cut the XS
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? I didn't use them but I did read them for the sake of review and they were good, the pattern pieces have grain lines to help you place your pattern pieces on the stripes properly. Just remember to cut one piece at a time so you can align the stripes properly.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?I love peplums and using the stripes to create a pattern makes it fun.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made? The sleeves are ridiculously wide and unflattering the way the pattern is cut, there is way too much ease so I pinched out almost 2 full inches to get a more flattering sleeve.
I love this!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteLooks great on you...
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that I found you yesterday and decided to go find me a lil sewing machine to get started. You took me back to the mid-80's when I was younger and my mother would make ALL my summer clothes with patterns from McCalls. The neighborhood mothers would be jelly as ever because I was lookin too cute!
LOL, that is great.
DeleteMimi, I can't. I just can't with you no more. You killing me. Seriously, just choked on my water when this came up. Marvelous darling!!!

ReplyDeleteLove it! So nice and I see you're wearing your new gift - looks great!
ReplyDeleteDope! Love this ;)
ReplyDeleteMimi, I really think you should go bigger and come out with a clothing line. Your taste in clothes is fantabulous. When you initially posted the pattern of the jacket that you wore yesterday, I couldn't wait to see the finish product as I knew your interpretation would be more amazing than the actual pic and you didn't disappoint. Since you won't make me something and I can't raid your closet, please design so I can go to your website and buy:-)
ReplyDeletethat is too cute! I have got to learn how to read patterns! so far I can only make things from your videos. I bought some pattern to play with I would love to try this one and for it to come out like this!
ReplyDeleteI'd be doing my dance! Halelujah!
As always, you look fabulous. Another winner. How do you crank them out so quickly? smh
ReplyDeleteI love it! I have that same pattern in my "Inspired by Mimi" box of patterns. Didn't have the nerve to try it yet. I hope to soon :)

ReplyDeleteMimi you are so talented and such a sweet spirit! Your blog inspires me to show the world my best self!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous, love your play on the stripes! I'm scared to try stripes (since I found out they should match, LOL), so thanks for your tip regarding the layout and to follow the grainlines (well on this pattern anyway).
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I am officially jealous. I attempted this top a few days ago and for some reason the arms/sleeves came out a bit wonky but you make me want to try it again.
ReplyDeleteAs usual you are rocking this! I just did the pencil skirt from your tutorial. I love what you did with the stripes and peplum.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Love and you accessorized the outfit fabulously as always!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGirl you be killing it....this is hot
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely a stunning outfit!!! Thanks for sharing ....as usual you've done a fantastic job. =)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love it. I am a big fan of all the stripe play I am seeing around. So cool how you can wear these pieces together or separate.
ReplyDeleteHello!!!!! I love your work ........... question: I really want to sew... but having a hard time finding a sewing machine. .... does it matter where you buy and brand of the machine? I was told since I am starting out I should go to Walmart (fits my pocket books) but at the same time I want it to last and be a stand up machine......... very confused..... please help!!!!
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is what everyone else is saying. I have this pattern and was trying to decide if I wanted to make it in a solid color but you have certainly changed my mind. Great Look!
ReplyDeleteAs usual I love what you do! When I grow up I want to be like you. I have already been inspired to do two of the patterns you made. I hope you do a tutorial on how to line up striped fabric the way you do in these pics.
ReplyDeleteLove it Mimi!!!!! As always you are the #1 stunna!!! (In my southern belle voice, girlfriend you are stunning, as always) :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see the peplum look come back!!! It's always been one of my favorite styles!!
Wow, I have that same pattern and wasn't going to attempt the stripe version, but after seeing your version, I've changed my mind! Will you kindly provide more detail on the sleeve alterations you made in yours? The pattern has a dart at the shoulder ... Did you keep that (I can't see it in the pics). And you made the whole sleep narrower by about 2 inched? How about the length? I hope my version turn out even half as good as yours.
ReplyDeleteI made the top this weekend . I was thinking about the dress but that was too much flare for me. I love it with the pencil skirt . Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Mimi! I want to make the midi skirt but I don't want it to be tight where it "cups" my butt. Do you have any suggestion for that?
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!! I love this.
ReplyDeleteOMG!! Will you do a tutorial on a peplum top soon?? Pwetty Pwease...Like the Regal Maxi...i'd totally buy it!!
ReplyDeleteI tried to make one (i forget the pattern) and did such a botched job i abandoned it half way :(
This and the Purple Lace dress are abso-gorge!!
Luv it :0)
ReplyDeleteGreat look!! & Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteI am in the process of making a peplum top and i a trying to figure out how to make sleeves and I need help with cutting out neck pieces, can you suggest any videos
Hi Mimi!
ReplyDeleteI want to make this top and skirt. I looked at the McCall pattern and noticed that a pencil skirt pattern is not included. Do you have a pencil skirt pattern you suggest?
Hi Mimi, how many yards did you use?
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother is helping me with the dress of this pattern for a cosplay. How do we pin the sleeves? The picture shown is not a good one at all
