Mimi G's Top 5 Online Fabric Shops!

Hi Darlings!

I get asked this question a lot so I thought it was time for another post on my favorite online fabric stores. I am lucky to live in LA where I have a vast assortment of fabric stores but for those who rely on online shopping I know it can be hard to know where to buy so here are my top 5 picks.

PICKS......

#1 Michael Levine: It is no secret that Michael Levine's is my favorite store in LA, I go there all the time and we have a great relationship so I know first hand that they really care about making you happy and for those who don't live here you can shop their online store!! www.lowpricefabric.com and don't forget that there is always a monthly coupon code for my readers just under my header.

*NOTE: The FLORAL/STRIPED FABRIC from my maxi was sold out TWICE!!! They found ONE LAST ROLL with 70 yards, HURRY yesterday 100 yards sold out almost immediately! Go NOW

#2 Gorgeous Fabrics: Man o'man does Ann have a great selection of fabrics on her site. There is always a great selection of designer prints and she has a great eye for buying on trend fabrics for us. Customer service is always top notch and Ann has a blog where she makes amazing garments and shares her knowledge of sewing too.

#3 High End Fabrics: This ebay shop is close to my heart because I know the owner and his wife and they are just salt of the earth people. If you want great knits, modal, knit prints, bamboo and so much more this is the place! The owners name is Juan Carlos and he is just the sweetest. Prices are amazing! and let him know Mimi G sent you.

#4 Fabric Mart Fabrics: I dont know them on personal level like the top 3 but I have ordered from them and have always recieved it quickly. They have a great selection of designer fabrics from Marc Jacobs, Maggie London, Anna Sui and sometimes even a bit of J. Crew

#5 Trim Fabric: I really like this online shop and have purchased from them a lot over the years. They have A HUGE amount of fabrics and in almost every category. The wool and knits are great but they have great silks at amazing prices and a great clearance section as low as $1.99 a yard sometimes.

DONT FORGET THE INTERFACING ;-)

Fashion Sewing Supply: You need to always have the right interfacings for your fabric and I will be doing a post on it's importance soon but I always buy my interfacing from the best place online by far. The quality is outstanding, the variety is amazing and Pam has a wealth of knowledge on the site.

  1. Thanks Mimi! Working with fabrics is the best job I could wish for, but it's what people do with them that makes them truly sing.
You and your readers are so inspiring!

  3. FINALLY OUR PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!!!!!
I'm not fortunate to live in a state that has a fashion district so this definately helps. I can easily say that you inspire each of us with your posts that we literally go out and buy it. Case in point, that border print. It sold out TWICE!! These sites will give us (me especially) an opportunity to explore an array of fabrics that one can only dream of working with. With that being said, I thank you Mimi from the top of my threads, to the tips of my needles!!! You are indeed an inspiration.

  4. Thanks for posting this Mimi.I would love to have a wider selection of fabrics to choose from. I am in Canada so I will visit these sites to see if they ship here. Fingers crossed.

  6. Thanks for the list Mimi. I've only ever ordered from Fabric.com and except for once have always been pleased with my choice. The one time I wasn't pleased I made the wrong fabric choice and easily returned it. They have free returns and free shipping over $35 and I always am over that amount. Plus there's usually a coupon code somewhere on the internet for an additional amount off your purchase price. But I will definitely try these others.

  8. Just curious for everyone's opinion on this...when you find a fabric that you love, but don't yet have a specific purpose in mind for it, how many yards do you generally purchase for your creative stash? For reference, I generally cut a size 16-18 pattern size and wear a 10-12 in RTW.

    1. I usually cut a 14-16 and typically buy 3 yards when I'm not sure of what I'll use it for.

    2. I'm a size 14 RTW and I generally buy 2.5 yards if it's for pants or a top, and 3 yards for a dress, button up shirt or jacket. A maxi dress or a something with a circle skirt might take up to 4 yards, but I rarely buy that much. 3 yards is the magic number for me if I just don't know what I'm going to make with it.

    3. Thank you for your input :) I was thinking three yards as well, but the shopping demon that pops up on my shoulder from time to time was telling me "noooo, you need FIVE yards."

  9. Mimi G, I'm from the UK and have been trying to look for good UK online fabric stores/websites (I'm a sewing newbie). Do you have any recommendations (maybe someone else has suggested UK websites to you)?

  10. Thanks for posting your favs. :-). It helps. Even though I live in a major city with lots of choices, it's good to see the end results firsthand on your blog, face book, you tube, etc. :-) THANKS!!

  11. Mimi, what a great post! I would have been super hesitant to purchase fabric from and eBay source, but based on your recommendation I checked out the site. Their fabrics are wonderful! I'll definitely add them to my resource list. PS....I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Marci Tilton's online fabric store!

  12. I've shopped at most of these except High End Fabrics - I will have to take a look! I think we must be fabric twins, because when the instant you posted the chevron print dress I went to Levine's site to buy it, and picked out the floral/stripe border print and the tencel denim as well, before you posted them!

I know a lot of people shop at the large bargain fabric sites like fabric.com and FFC, but I find that the quality and service at those is very hit or miss. I think the fabric quality is better at the smaller places that buy up garment manufacturing overstock, plus the owners are passionate about fabric and know their stuff. Fabric Mart is my favorite and I also recommend Vogue Fabrics in Chicago. Both places offer swatch clubs which are great if you are just getting into online fabric shopping and need to feel the fabric before you order.

  13. Hey Mimi,

I'm in TN on business and excaped to the fabric store for some R&R. During my visit I met one of your excited followers at the local Hancock Fabrics. She was so excited and had just came from the store where she brought a sewing machince. I helped her find two patterns and tools and gave her a quick brifing and she left the store ready to go! Keep inspiring! You are doing a wonderful job keeping the craft alive!!!!

  14. Hi Mimi,
Love your blog! Thanks for the post it was very helpful. I live near LA fashion district and plan to visit Michael Levine soon; does your coupon code work online only? Also, do you recommend other smaller fabric shops in the LA fashion district? Will be making my trip down there during the summer and want to get some great fabric (at great prices! lol).

    Thanks a bunch,
    gg
